  • "GROUP DYNAMICS AND LEARNINGBruce Tuckman`s (1965) theory or stages of group development had been studiedearlier but I could feel it during the process. He suggested the four stages namelyForming, Storming, Norming and Performing guiding the various aspects of teamdevelopment and individual behaviour. It can be regarded as a tool to elaborate thegroup development process and its various aspects. The formation of the group wasa difficult task due to lack of group members cooperation and willingness to workwith a set of few people. There were a few conflicts regarding the team meetings andI took it as a challenge by not avoiding it; as avoidance of the various quarrelsmeans the things are not done efficiently. Recognizing the threats and solving themis the journey towards accomplishment. The group had divided opinions regarding the meetings. They were disinterested inholding group meetings as some believe that being an individual task, there is nosuch requirement of the group meetings and as a result some did not turn up for themeetings. However, I believe the ones who were present were efficient enough tohighlight the problems associated with various aspects of the project. For instance, one of the members suggested working upon the pharmaceutical industry andacknowledged the ways of product testing facts which is found to be a challengingissue. However, another individual researched the factors affecting the industry. Thefeedback by other group members including me has helped to analyse the industryspecific situations. One thing I personally dislike about the group meetings are that I,being the group coordinator, had to initiate with most activities which should alsocome from other group members. The group members started to come up with various issues with the development ofthe process. As expected, there were a few issues rather conflicts that started totake place within the group. I had to maintain my calm but at instances, became58 difficult for me as well. Tuckman has argued that confrontations usually take placealong with the key issues. Some members were found to be over-reacting on theseissues. However, the main part was their involvement from beginning to the end. Ihave observed that irrespective of the type of activities or project, when a group isinvolved, the conflicts are mandate to take place. However, these conflicts have ledto a few innovative ideas like how we can create a new product and how will be theprocess like. Such questions rather arguments helped to discover new ideas, strategies and to learn aspects of a group work. At some points, where thearguments could have taken a negative phase had to be complimented by acompromising behaviour which proved to be obliging in proceeding with the work. The compromising behaviour was appreciated by others and I felt like beingdeveloping a process of a new product in reality. It gave me a sense of recognitionas a manager and helped in motivating myself. With the development of process, the group engaged in some extra activitiesbesides the project work. For instance, it gave us an opportunity to know about thegroup members, their countries as we all are from different nations. “The Libyanbanking system is appreciable as they strongly work in favour of their employees”, asdiscovered from one of the group members who is sent for higher education by theBank of Libya to gain higher skills. The personal as well as work experience bygroup members contributed value towards the project. For instance, the bankingindustry in Libya highly emphasizes on employee involvement in the productdevelopment process. The nature of assignment was individual and therefore it was expected that thegroup meetings will be irregular in the passing weeks. However, the response by thegroup was much better than expected. The meetings started to minimize asindividuals as well as I focussed on individual assessment. But at the same time, itwas helpful to consult the group members regarding several issues varying betweenproblems and solutions. The group activities succeeded due to an endearing assistance by varioussupervisors. I was able to formulate a marketing plan on account of supervisoryconsultation. For instance, I would not have made notes and would have proceededas I had in my previous assignments. However, the time period for consultation was59 limited and I was not able to browse for too many questions due to lack of reading in3 days. But the guidance has not only helped in pursuing rather starting with theproject but has helped to emphasize on important aspects which I might havemissed upon. Further, different supervisors provided different aspects to focus uponwhich helped me to critically analyze the overall situation. Besides the courseleaders, the additional assistance by library tutors helped me discover new websiteslike www.thetimes100.co.uk, www.intute.com etc. I went through my work over andover and identified number of mistakes. The application of self understanding andknowledge was the emphasis that tutors were continually focussing. I also consulted my colleagues in search of honest feedback in order to resolve thelacking points of my project. Various articles and journals helped to improvise on mywriting style and formulating more argumentative statements based on myunderstanding. Feedback is demonstrated as a crucial mechanism for reflection.(Esa Poikela, 2004; 271) This was my first major project which has added significantvalue in terms of writing, reading, assessing, and analyzing situations of the practicalworld. I have realized that self assessment can be proved as beneficial in social andprofessional life. Recognizing the capabilities or strengths as well as weakness hashelped me to direct resources in an efficient manner. For instance, the notes makinghabit helped to overcome my weaknesses. Further, completion of tasks within thespecified time helped me gain time management skills and is reflected in my dailylifestyle. This would further help in seeking employment and a better career. Theemployers expect the employees to possess competent social and learning skillsalong with technicality. 60 "
